Books for Dynamics AX 2012

Dynamics AX Performance Optimization Guide: Fixing Troubles with Microsoft Dynamics AX and SQL Server
Publication Date April 8, 2013
Beginner Score
Expert Score
This book talks about setup and performance related topics for your whole AX setup. It is very detailed, and it's not just the only book on this topic but definitely the only book you'll ever need. The amount of detail is amazing, and the details are accurate and precise (so much so it even impressed our team here).
Implementing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 with Sure Step 2012
Publication Date March 22, 2013
Beginner Score
Expert Score
For implementers this book provides a good overview but will most likely be very much in line with your actual practices. For customers it's a good overview of the general implementation cycle. Specifically to the development portion this gives a good overview and food for thought, although I absolutely disagree with XPOs being the most practical way to move code after go live. Don't do it people!!
Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Services
Publication Date December 25, 2012
Beginner Score
Expert Score
From beginner to expert, this book explains the principles and architecture of AIF and SysOperation services in AX 2012. A must-read for anyone implementing and/or customizing AX 2012 services.
Inside Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012
Publication Date October 21, 2012
Beginner Score
Expert Score
The only Microsoft Press book on Dynamics AX 2012, it provides insight into multiple facets of the AX Technical world. Don't expect a reference book, but still worthwhile for experts. Contains interesting topics missing from the 2009 version of this book.
Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Development Cookbook
Publication Date May 4, 2012
Beginner Score
Expert Score
The development cookbook provides some day-to-day "recipes" for common requests for customizations in AX. A little less useful for experts, but it may still give you some good ideas/food for thought.

Quality Assurance for Dynamics AX-Based ERP Solutions
Publication Date February 29, 2008
Beginner Score
Expert Score
Interesting topic but the book falls entirely short. Besides annoying grammatical errors and spelling errors, a lot of the content is based on freely available Microsoft material. The original content in the book is questionable, assuming you can get past the poor editing.

General Development Books

The Art of Unit Testing
Publication Date July 5, 2009
Beginner Score
Expert Score
Although the book's subtitle is "with examples in .NET", I found this to be a good introduction and explanation to core principles of unit testing, without getting hung up on the implementation details. Not being an expert myself, I rated it 3 stars for experts, as I'm assuming an expert may want more in-depth examples - which was exactly what I didn't want so I rated it 5 stars for beginners.
Code Complete: A Practical Handbook of Software Construction
Publication Date July 7, 2004
Beginner Score
Expert Score
Beginner or expert, this book is a fantastic read. You will have many "duh" moments, but nonetheless it's good to see all these core principles and good practices for software development explained in a concise way, with good examples.
